Library entrance

img_0323.JPGThe interior of our hallways are filled with boxes, electrical supplies, pipes, stacks of ceiling tiles, and dry wall sheeting. So today’s photo is the entrance of the library as it currently looks. For “normal,” see our MILT Tutorial.

Resume for a musician

[Yesterday was not Friday as my post indicated. So here's Thursday's post]

Reference question of the week: How do I put together a resume? This was asked on behalf of a recent graduate. So what resources on resume crafting are available to the musician?

  • CIM Library’s Career Resource Guide (lists resources in the CIM library…but you could easily search for them in your local public or academic library)
  • Bridge: Worldwide Music Connection (New England Conservatory of Music) : NEC’s Career Center provides excellent career guidance besides an extensive list of current job opportunities for musicians. Subscription to this service is highly recommend for the performing musician on the job market. The CIM Library provides access to Bridge to all currently enrolled CIM students.
  • Berkleemusic.com provides a good resume tutorial with examples for different resume styles.
  • For a more general guide, see the Riley Guide, authored by a professional librarian and musician.

All these resources are tagged on our del.icio.us list

Goodbye David, Hello Jimmy

Lunch at the Chop House

Today we enjoyed lunch at the Cleveland Chop House. We toasted David’s 5 years of service as student employee (2001-03) and circulation manager (2003-06). We also welcomed Jimmy for his first day of training as our new circulation manager.

David received a new gift to replace his rubberband shooting hobby in the library, a marshmallow shooter. Just a few shots from our fun this Friday.

Listen2This

In planning this blog, Wednesday posts will feature a list of compact discs or DVDs of interest in our ever-growing media collection. Since our facility is closed at this time (except to a very few), it seems unfair to promote such a list. However they will be a regular feature once the academic semester commences.

So I will take this opportunity to announce our plans for the media room in our renovated library. Over the next year, the library will undergo a complete renovation. Most of the work will be accomplished over the summer of 2007. Our media services will be relocated to the lower level, to the former percussion studios. We have approval for a distributed audio system – enabling us to distribute any recording to all user stations. Compact shelving will house the items behind a service desk. The room will feature TWO group listening rooms.

At the present time, the media collection is bursting at the seams. We have completely filled our media shelving with over 10,000 compact discs. Over this summer we have doubled our DVD collection which now includes 160 titles.

Our compact discs and DVDs are cataloged. We also maintain an updated list at our Circulation desk (compiled diligently by Denise Green).

Cleveland Orchestra Program Notes Index

A unique resource at our library is our Cleveland Orchestra Program Notes Index. This database is an index to the programs notes (and subsequently, the performances) of the Cleveland Orchestra. The database is produced from the actual programs, held by the CIM Library. Besides the regular season concerts, the index also includes Blossom performances (sponsored by the orchestra), chamber and recital series, Cleveland Youth Orchestra and other special performances (as programs exist in the collection). The index currently extends from the 1944-45 to 2004-05 seasons. It is continually updated.

Besides locating program notes within the collection, the index describes the repertoire and performance history of the orchestra. How many of Mozart’s piano concertos have been performed? What works did Robert Shaw conduct during his tenure?. When did Vladimir Horowitz perform with the orchestra?

We are very willing to Interlibrary loan individual programs for those who are outside the Cleveland area. The Cleveland Orchestra maintains an archives for more indepth information about the orchestra’s history.

Monday photos

Each Monday, I will update our Flickr pages with current photos. Today you’ll find exterior pictures of our facilities.

North Building - Cleveland Institute of Music

The main event today was the return of the furniture and orchestra library collection. The expansion of an electrical closet into the orchestra library provide an opportunity to get compact shelving. As this room takes shape, more photos will be uploaded.

Summer activities

The library has been mostly empty of people this summer but surrounded by the sounds of construction. As the building is closed, we average one to two people visiting during our limited hours (1:30 – 3:30 pm).

The main library related projects this summer have been 1) installation of compact shelving in our orchestra library 2) construction of a staircase in what we call the “glass lounge” which is the south room in the library. You can see pictures of these projects on our flickr site (see left bar).

We will welcome Jimmy Hilton as our new circulation manager on July 20th. David Block, after several years of outstanding service, will be moving to Colorado. This week he is checking out the view at his next place of residence.

I’ve also added pictures from a recent construction tour to our Flickr site.
