Musical feaste

Thanksgiving TableIn the spirit of this season of feasting, the Robinson Music Library staff have compiled a display of music that centers around food.  Many composers, including Berstein, Bolcom and Martinu have written music about food.  It seems that wine is  a very popular topic among composers.

The library’s collection includes many scores & recordings of this tasteful music.

Drink your full.  The display case is located  in the west hallway in the main building near the security desk.

Case email via Gmail

Do you like Gmail?   It is now possible to access your Case email in a Google environment.  Case has made Google Applications  such as Google email, Google Calendar & Google Documents available to any person with a Case ID & password.  You can now access your Case email in a Gmail interface.

Eventually Gmail will be the default application for all Case/CIM students.

  • All incoming students (September 2008) are automatically set up for Gmail.  Logging in to http://webmail.case.edu will default to a Gmail account.
  • By May of 2009, all remaining enrolled students will automatically be migrated to Gmail.

If you currently are using the Case email interface and would like to transition to the Google Applications interface, visit Case’s ITS Home for directions under Google Apps.

Introducing Orchestral Music Online

The Robinson Music Library announces a new online resource — Orchestral Music Online.

Orchestral Music Online is the digitized version of a well-known reference book by David Daniels, Orchestral Music: A Handout (Scarecrow Press, 2005).

Orchestral Music Online describes over 6700 orchestral works by 900 composers, including

  • instrumentation (including chorus type and soloists)
  • duration of individual movements
  • titles of individual movements
  • biographical information on the composer
  • links from individual works to music publishers and other resources

This is an excellent tool for the following questions:

  • What are the voice/choral requirements for Steve Reich’s Tehillim?
  • What is the name of the second movement in Tchaikovsky’s 2nd symphony?
  • How many flutes are required in Rameau’s overture to Zais?
  • Determine the length of a concert based on the orchestra repertoire performed.

Orchestral Music Online can be access from any Case-networked computer or from off-campus using the VPN Client.
